Hi, I’m Antionette Jones, owner and lead designer of Designs by TTOC, and I’ve been passionate about florals for as long as I can remember. Raised here in Atlanta, I grew up surrounded by nature’s beauty, and that’s where my love for floral design began. One of my favorite things is sharing that passion and knowledge with both novice and professional florists alike.
Lately, I’ve seen more and more people embracing the art of creating their floral arrangements at home. It’s not just about beautifying your space; it’s also about mindfulness, creativity, and expressing your personal style. With its rich colors and textures, fall is the perfect season to dive into this trend and create something beautiful for your home.
Whether you’re new to flower arranging or looking to sharpen your skills, I’ve put together some of my favorite tips to help you design your stunning fall floral masterpiece.
1. Shop Local for Quality Flowers
One of the best things you can do when arranging flowers is to start with the freshest, highest-quality blooms. As a local business owner myself, I always encourage people to shop local. Your neighborhood flower shop will have fresh, seasonal selections that are perfect for fall arrangements, and the staff can offer personalized advice to guide your design.
Need fresh blooms for your DIY project? Stop by our shop at 1600 Chattahoochee Ave Ste D, Atlanta, GA 30318, and pick fresh flowers right from our cooler! One of our talented designers will be happy to help you select the best blooms for your arrangement. Come by and get inspired, or simply browse our beautiful selection of seasonal flowers!
2. Start with Fresh Flowers
Look for fresh, vibrant blooms—flowers that have firm petals, rich color, and no signs of wilting. Fall flowers like sunflowers, dahlias, and chrysanthemums are perfect choices that bring warmth and vibrancy to your arrangements.
3. Prep Your Flowers Properly
Before you start arranging, it’s important to prep your flowers. Remove any leaves that will sit below the water line in your vase, as this helps prevent bacteria buildup and keeps your flowers fresh longer. Always trim the stems at an angle for better water absorption.
4. Use Floral Foam or Chicken Wire for Stability
To make sure your arrangement stays in place, especially if you’re just starting, I recommend using floral foam or chicken wire. Both help keep the flowers stable as you design.
Floral Foam
Soak the foam in water until it’s fully saturated, then place it at the bottom of your container to hold your stems securely.
Chicken Wire
For a more sustainable option, crumple chicken wire into a ball and insert it into the vase. It will support your flowers without any waste.
5. Start with Your Focal Flowers
Begin your design by placing your focal flowers—the boldest and most eye-catching blooms. These will create the foundation for your arrangement, so feel free to play with different heights and angles to add interest.
6. Add Accent and Filler Flowers
After you’ve arranged your focal flowers, it’s time to add filler and accent flowers to complement the design. This is where you can bring in the seasonal feel with smaller, more delicate blooms, greenery, or even dried elements.
7. Incorporate Fall Elements
One of my favorite parts of fall flower arranging is incorporating natural elements like branches, berries, and small pumpkins. These touches make your arrangement feel seasonal and inviting, perfect for the autumn months.
8. Add Finishing Touches
Once you’re happy with your design, step back and take a look. Fill any gaps with additional greenery or flowers, and give your arrangement a final spritz of water to keep everything fresh.
9. Display and Enjoy
Now that your arrangement is complete, find the perfect spot to showcase your creation. Whether it’s on the dining table, kitchen island, or entryway, your floral arrangement will bring a touch of fall beauty into your home
There’s nothing quite like the satisfaction of creating your floral arrangement. It allows you to express your creativity while bringing a personal touch to your home. I hope these tips inspire you to grab some flowers and start designing your fall arrangement.
